Launched in 1975, and expanded nationally in 1980, BVA recruits and trains business executives and managers who have an interest in volunteering for the arts and places them as pro bono consultants with client arts organizations. The program is free and available to small and mid-sized arts organizations from all disciplines throughout the five boroughs. BVA also helps to develop the management and leadership skills of the Business Volunteers, and enhances their awareness of and commitment to corporate social responsibility and citizenship.
In New York City’s five boroughs, BVA serves approximately 90 arts organization clients annually. The services and in-kind resources provided through BVA has a cumulative value of approximately $350,000 each year in New York City.

Each summer, the program introduces 10 undergraduate students from culturally-diverse backgrounds to careers and volunteer leadership opportunities with nonprofit arts organizations in all five boroughs. The program provides each intern with an in-depth understanding of arts management issues, and a broad sense of how to access the arts. Many of the students are subsequently hired by the arts groups with which they interned.
In addition to building diversity and equity within the field, the program promotes partnerships between business and the arts through a mentorship component of the program - and through corporate financial support. The program also fosters collaboration between participating arts organizations representing all of New York City’s boroughs.
